Graffiti Skate Zone Contest Series.	10-06-2008
This week GSZ will embark on its first ever mini contest series. Starting this Wednesday after school gets out they will begin their 8 week cumlative points contest series. Basically each week a skater who enters the mini street contest will earn points for just entering. Then they will score each skater and award extra points for their respective finish. They also will award extra bonus points for their "trick of the week" if the skater completes it during his/her skate runs or jam. They also will award extra bonus points for their weekly "secret trick of the week" for each skater who lands this pre-selected trick during his/her runs or jams. Plus, each week they will add other creative ways for skaters to earn extra points to add to their totals . At the end of the 8 weeks of contests they will take the top 10 highest scores and have a finals jam event to determine the overall winner. Prizes will be given out each week to the top 3 high scores but smaller type prizes like shirts, hats, passes, bearings etc... At the finals prizes and awards will be given out to the top 5 skaters along with bigger prize packs and prizes like IPODS, Playstations or phones. FOr more info, contact dan at GSZ.

To fully appreciate the allure of the Free Flow Tour for up-and-coming amateur skateboarders, look no further than the pro Skate Park contest on the 2008 AST Dew Tour, where last year’s Free Flow Tour champ Chaz Ortiz is now holding it down in the top three – just behind Paul Rodriguez and Ryan Sheckler – among the best of the best in pro competition. The Free Flow Tour has also been good to 2006 champ David Loy, now a star of the Birdhouse Skateboards team. Add a new name to that list of freshly-minted Free Flow legends: Timmy Knuth. The 17 year-old skater from Melbourne, Florida won the Free Flow contest at Kona Skatepark in August, earning the right to compete in Finals at the Toyota Challenge, the 4th of 5 stops on the AST Dew Tour. Hundreds of skaters from around the country competed in 16 regional contests, each sending one winner here to Salt Lake City for the Free Flow Tour Finals. On a Dew Tour Skate Park course designed for pro competition, Knuth proceeded through quarterfinals and semi-finals to skate in a 4-man Finals jam session and emerge as champion. Knuth finished just ahead of 16 year-old skater CJ Dixon of Cocoa Beach, FL, winner of the Free Flow contest at MESH Skatepark, and 15 year-old Alex Longcamp from Aurora, IN, winner of the Free Flow contest at Factory Skatepark. Knuth has been steadily climbing up in the world of amateur skateboarding. He won the Best Trick contest at the Damn Am contest in Minneapolis in June, and has made the top 10 at many recent contests. He considers himself a street skater first and foremost, but says he’s also happy to be holding his own in competition. “I’m friends with both Chaz Ortiz and David Loy, so to be able to follow their path and come out on top of the Free Flow Tour feels really good,� says Knuth. Next up: Knuth’s Free Flow Tour title gives him a wildcard ticket to skate against some of his personal heroes in Prelims at the PlayStation Pro next month in Orlando. He has big skate shoes to fill: Both Loy and Ortiz took full advantage of the opportunity, qualifying for Finals and kick-starting their skateboarding careers. “The contest in Orlando is only about 45 minutes from my home, so I’m really looking forward to being able to skate there and have a lot of my friends and family come see it,� says Knuth. “To be honest it hasn’t all really sunk in yet, but I know this is pretty big.�

ASR Trade Show day 3 nightlife	09-08-2008
The last time we were in California before this ASR we partied pretty hard with Tod Swank from Tum Yeto and tried to pull an all niter that resulted in a very very bad idea. I swore I was going to keep it chill the night before our flight and get a good night rest for our trip back home. The night started out harmless with dinner with Jon Montesi and Corby from Westside and then a few drinks at a local bar. On the way back to the hotel we ran into Don Brown and he told us to stop by the lobby bar for a few drinks. It was still early so I didn't see any harm in it so I hung out with Don and the SPoT crew and had a few more drinks before calling it a night. Buuut 1 drink turned into 2 and then 2 turned into 4, 4turned into 14 and all of a sudden I remember hearing a voice saying there was a party on the 3rd floor. At this time I was in full party mode and my 6am flight was the last thing on my mind. I will let the photos tell the rest of the story. See you all again in January!!
ASR Trade Show day 3	09-08-2008
We kept our 3rd and final day at ASR pretty mellow. On the way to the show we saw the LRG whip. They know how to ride in style! Speaking of style Nixon and Oakley have some very HOT new products coming out for all you that like to skate and look good while doing it! While talking to AJ at One Skateboards we saw Kareem Campbell getting an interview. I wanted to jump behind him and hold up a FTK but don't think he would be hyped if I did that. Word is he has a new company coming out called GUAPO. Pete Kelly told me Guapo was Italian for The Big Cheese but it is also Spanish for "Ladies Man". Either way we are going to have to give this international playa an interview and get our facts straight! THE DUDE himself was there! One of the best seminars I have ever attended was the Dwindle Tech Clinic were Professional Skateboarders Bod Boyle, Chet Thomas and Rodney Mullen spoke about how Dwindle products are manufactured and the technology behind their products. You might be thinking to yourself "making skateboards isn't rocket science" but after watching the presentation that had for us you might think otherwise.
ASR Trade Show day 2 nightife	09-08-2008
First stop for the night was the Embassy Suites to meet up with Pete Kelly, Kelly Welsh, Cullen, Gabe, and Tony before checking out the Social Distortion concert at the House of Blues. Seeing the Skate Park of Tampa sticker made me feel like home and I had such a great time I almost forgot it was a business trip. After the Social D show we went to the "W" Hotel for an Etnies party that was going off!
ASR Trade Show day 2	09-08-2008
Today was our 2nd day in California but technically our first day at ASR The San Diego Convention center is a beautiful place and I always love seeing it because I know good things are sure to come. The jet lag really caught up and now I know not to set any appointments before 10am. But it didn’t stop the people at the Stereo booth. But with their new line looking as sick as it is I am not surprised one bit. One thing that did surprise me was a photo of World Industries team rider Dustin Blauvelt that our friend Jake Schrickling shot. That was pretty rad. New Era has a lot of nice hats and gives me an idea…FTK hats??? Down the isle at the Tum Yeto booth we saw Tampa local Abdias Rivera larger than life, they also have some real good looking Foundation decks coming out real soon. From old to new the SK8OLOGY booth was refreshing break from meetings and was a great exhibit that makes you think about the history and future of skateboarding. The day was nearing an end and talking and walking all day made us pretty thirsty so we stopped by the Beer Garden for a drink before we called it a day and to our surprise we ran into the DVS party team and Whitney from Dwindle. As we were walking out we ran into pro skaters Jamie Thomas and Pete Kelly and I had to get a photo! Time to get a bite to eat and get ready for the great nightlife!
ASR Trade Show Day 1	09-04-2008
I always love coming out to San Diego for ASR because of all the great opportunities that come up. Yesterday was was a great day. We checked out the open house at Black Box and saw the burnout machine.--I think there is some footage on the ZERO web site. After doing burn outs and wheelies in the parking lot we headed to Matt Hensley's Flying Elephant for some good music, food and a few pints. It was also Black Label's 20 Year Anniversary so we lucked out with that. We bumped into a lot of long time no see friends, like Tod Swank and Glenn Brummage from Tum Yeto, Dennis Cramer from Innes, and a few Santa Cruz legends. This trip to ASR is going to be one of our best yet! What am I saying? Every trip to ASR is our best trip! Thanks Andy T for putting a roof over our head and making all this possible! DVS Wins Skate & Create	08-20-2008
Back in April, TransWorld SKATEboarding held its first annual Skate & Create contest. In a nutshell, the contest consists of four teams of four pros, one am, a photographer, a videographer, and an art director. Each team is locked in a warehouse for nine days with a smorgasbord of ramps, rails, banks, and boxes. The team that can come up with the most creative set concept, skate obstacles, photography, skateboarding, and video wins. All teams involved produced amazing videos and brilliant photos, but after the judging was said and done it was DVS that emerged as the winner. In honor of its accomplishments, DVS has launched a Mini-Website that showcases its contest video, a behind-the-scenes video, point and shoot photos, as well as brief interviews with the creative minds behind the project. Eric Koston, Jereme Rogers and Darrell Stanton will be joining the Dew Tour high rollers PRod, Sheckler and Lutzka at the AST Dew Tour's Portland Skate Park comp on Friday, August 22nd. The street-focused course in Portland will feature stairs, rails, jersey barriers, and cement ledges along with elements that will give the course a real-life feel – including a picnic table, fire hydrant, brick stamped Skatelite, and shrubbery. PRod expressed his approval of the new course, "This course is definitely my cup of tea. I saw the drawing of it, and it looked great. For me personally, this style of course gives me more options of tricks to try. Michael Arthur King, 54, passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 26, 2008	08-04-2008
He suffered a heart attack while driving home from a game of golf in his hometown of Palm Bay, Florida. Mike was able to pull to the side of the road but was gone by the time medical help arrived. A native Floridian, Mike began skateboarding in the late 1960's and became one of the east coast's early pioneers. He made his mark in skateboarding in the early 1970's skating the infamous Haulover underpass in North Miami Beach. Mike later became a member of the Walker Skateboard Team and competed regularly in contests, routinely driving the Walker team van around the state, ferrying teammates like Rodney Mullen and Jim McCall to contests and demos. As one of the sport's elders, Mike's advice and coaching of the team was an extra bonus to sponsor Bruce Walker. "Mike King was an original. He was such a benefit to have along when we traveled because he kept our teamriders out of trouble by keeping them on track and focused. He was well known for his upbeat, positive attitude and he effected those around him in a very positive way." recalled Walker. "He will be sorely missed." In 2002, Mike King was nominated for induction into the Florida Skateboard Hall of Fame. While he has not yet been formally inducted, Mike's name has continuously appeared on the nominee list and will again be in consideration for the upcoming induction ceremony, scheduled for January 2009 at Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida. Mike King is survived by his wife Maria, sons Chris, Richard, and Patrick, and daughter Michelle. His funeral service was held on Friday, August 1, 2008 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Palm Bay. In lieu of flowers, an education fund has been set up. Donations can be made out to Patrick S. King c/o Riverside National Bank, 4625 Babcock St.NE, Palm Bay, FL 32905. In an attempt to uncover some of the most amazing shop talent out there, DVS presents Shopliftn'— a shop video contest of epic proportions. Here’s how it works. All DVS skate shops will receive a golden ticket to participate, but only the first 100 shops to RSVP will be eligible to compete. These 100 lucky shops will have the opportunity to produce a five-minute video segment highlighting the best skateboarding their shop team has to offer. Each team will have exactly five months to film, produce, and edit their footage. On January 31, 2009 each team will submit their footage to DVS. Each shop video will then be meticulously judged by DVS team riders on the quality of skateboarding, cinematography, editing, soundtrack, and art direction. The shop that produces the best overall video will receive custom DVS shop shoes, a DVS demo, and an ad running in a major skateboard magazine announcing them as the winner of the Shopliftn’ contest. Good Wood 2008 - Give Back	07-24-2008
On Saturday, July 26th Give Back will roll ahead in Brooklyn, New York where 50 artists will be auctioning off one-of-a-kind custom skate decks to support Stoked, an organization that mentors kids through action sports. The auction begins at 7pm and the opening party runs until midnight. Bid on a custom deck (all priced below $500), dance to beats by Brion ISAACS (33Hz and ShindigNYC) and help prove that “one teen at a time, counterculture WILL change the world.” Artists include Fernanda Cohen, Chuck Anderson, Leo Espinosa, Don Kilpatrick, Matt Gordon, Nathan Fox, Jeremy Traum, Keetra Dixon, Mike Perry, Chris Ryniak, Plastic Kid, Neuarmy, Serge Gay Jr. and many more. 2008 VANS WARPED TOUR ST. PETE FLORIDA	07-11-2008
From entrance to exit there was never a dull moment at the 2008 VANS WARPED TOUR. We missed the mini ramp contest but 688 owner, Jay Turner placed 3rd and we were told it was a good turnout. We caught a show at the Hurley Stage and then bumped into local, Ricky Martin drinking ice cold PBR at the Skate Park Of Tampa booth. The SPoT was up to their usual antics and I didn’t want to get spray painted on so we made our way to the main stage. On the way, I thought I was going to loose my eyesight when we saw this rather large woman (peep the photo) jamming out. Yeah, it was that bad. It was all good though because we saw our friend, Frank holding it down at the VANS booth and he showed us a brand new pair of SLAYER VANS that should be coming out soon. They also had a few other pairs of VANS I have never seen before, but should be dropping sooner than later so keep your eyes open for those to be arriving at your local skate shop. We caught a few more shows and called it a day. ZOO YORK HEADS NORTH OF THE BORDER	07-10-2008
Having just returned from a lengthy three-week European Tour, the Zoo Crew isn't wasting any time as they prepare to embark on the 2008 “ZOO-B-Q” Canada Tour from July 22nd–25th. A few days before the tour officially kicks off, several ZY Officials will head to Quebec to compete in the 4th Annual Zoo York Am Getting Paid (AGP) contest which runs from July 18th–20th at Montreal’s South Parc Skatepark. AGP is widely recognized as one of today’s most prestigious international skateboarding contests for amateurs only. With a hefty prize purse of $10,000 USD up for grabs at this year’s event, all the rippers will be there including Zoo’s very own Brandon Westgate, Anthony Shetler, Matt Miller, Ron Deily, and Eli Reed. Once Am Getting Paid is a wrap, the “ZOO-B-Q” Canada Tour will get underway. East Coaster Jereme Rogers Places First!	07-10-2008
After nabbing a respectable fourth place finish at the DVS CPH Pro, DVS Pro Jereme Rogers claimed first at the fifteenth annual Mystic Sk8 Cup in Prague the weekend of July 4’th, 2008. As one of the most popular and prestigious events on the WCS European contest circuit, the Mystic Cup plays host to some of the best international skateboarders in the world and entertains more than 200 skaters from more than 25 countries. The competition is always tough at the Mystic Cup, but Jereme Rogers’ consistency and trick selection won over the judges and earned him a spot at the top of the podium. “It’s good to see Jereme back on top,” says DVS Skate Team Manager Gabe Clement. “Jereme skated solid in the CPH Pro with his 4th place win, but his win in Prague tops off the Euro trip! Congrats Jereme!”

You will also find articles on the Damn Am, Red Bull Manny Mania, a look at the current skate scene in Gainesville, We also hopped in the RV with Marty and the Kona crew to cover the Florida Bowl Riders Cup. When the Northeast starts to warm up there is no better place to shred. Check out the ATL2NYC Road Trip that the crew at Reveal Skateboards pulled off. Speaking of NYC. Check out the article on the Deathbowl to Downtown video premiere that went down as well. As it sometimes takes a DIY approach to survive in skateboarding, check out our DIY candidate this issue, Huey Crowley who does his own illustrations on boards and submits work to STUCK Magazine and FLIP Skateboards. There are a whole bunch or other articles and interviews in this 100+ page banger of an issue, but this is starting to get long winded. Just be sure to check out the issue when it hits your local right coast shop or park. But better make it quick. Since FTK is FREE they tend to go pretty quick. Virtual mag should be up this week.
ANDREW REYNOLDS VOTED ONTO THE NIXON TEAM	06-25-2008

Chaz is known for his super smooth, seemingly effortless style, and at only fourteen years of age he exudes a quiet confidence well beyond his years. The Zoo Crew will embark on a quick East Coast Tour from May 16th - 18th. Along for the ride will be virtually the entire squad including ZY Officials Zered Bassett, Aaron Suski, Donny Barley, Kevin Taylor, Forrest Kirby, Brandon Westgate, Anthony Shetler, Matt Miller, Lamare Hemmings, Ron Deily, and Eli Reed. On May 16th at 6PM the crew will host a demo at Academy Skatepark in Woodbridge, CT. Then on May 17th they'll head back to NYC to partake in the 2nd Annual Harold Hunter Day (full details below). And finally on May 18th they'll cruise down the Garden State Parkway to Sayreville, NJ, for a team signing at NJ Skateshop at 2PM, and a demo at Sayreville Skatepark at 3PM.
